How much does the Claude API cost?+
Anthropic bills per token. As of 2026, list rates per 1M tokens are: Claude Opus 4.8 and 4.7 — $5 input / $25 output; Claude Sonnet 5 — $2 / $10 (introductory, through 2026-08-31); Claude Sonnet 4.6 — $3 / $15; Claude Haiku 4.5 — $1 / $5. How is Claude API pricing calculated?+
Cost = (input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate). Prompt caching adds a cache-read charge at 0.1× the input rate and a 5-minute cache-write charge at 1.25× the input rate. The calculator does all of this for you across every model.

A token is roughly ¾ of a word in English — about 4 characters. 1,000 tokens is ~750 words. Both the text you send (input) and the text Claude generates (output) are counted, and output tokens are billed at a higher rate than input.
